THE GREAT ICY BARRIER OF ANTARCTICA OBSERVED BY #PRISMA

The image acquired on December 10th 2021 through the hyperspectral EYE of PRISMA, satellite developed by OHB Italia and funded by ASI-Agenzia Spaziale Italiana, captures the ice reserves of #Antarctica near the Ross Barrier, the largest ice shelf, as big as France, which occupies the entire southern half of the Ross Sea.

The framed area is almost halfway between the Italian station “Mario Zucchelli” of the Programma Nazionale Ricerche in Antartide (PNRA), and the US McMurdo station of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP).

PRISMA is closely monitoring the #health of our #Planet, its beauty as well as its fragility. One more time PRISMA provided fundamental information that allows us to investigate the #threat of increased melting, thinning and the potential break-up of ice from warm ocean waters.
