SOLAR ORBITER/ #METIS: A VERY CLOSE LOOK AT THE #SUN AT A DISTANCE OF ONLY 40 MILLION KM

Swirls of gas, very long filaments and powerful flares: never before has the Sun’s atmosphere been observed in such detail. These first incredible images were captured on the 26th March in an extreme environment up to 500C° from #SolarOrbiter, the new ESA/NASA #SunExplorer, when it was a third of the Earth-Sun distance.
The Italian METIS (wavelength multi-bands coronagraph) is one of the cutting-edge technological instruments aboard the probe, funded by ASI-Agenzia Spaziale Italiana and realized by
#OHBItalia together with a team of scientists and industries.

METIS is able to observe the structure and the dynamics of the full solar #corona (the Sun’s outer atmosphere) simultaneously in the visible and ultraviolet bands. It is using broad-band, polarized and narrow-band imaging technology: a unique capability combining three different wavelength bands by means of a single #telescope.
The corona region is crucial to better understand the solar atmospheric phenomena and the process governing the expansion of solar plasma into interplanetary space.
It is exciting to see how the images of the solar corona taken by METIS in its field of view integrate very well with those of the other telescopes on Solar Orbiter. All together they will soon unlock the
#secrets of our giving-life Star, investigating how it works and revealing the Sun-Earth connections.

We will update on October 2022 when it is scheduled the next close pass …
