On page 27, the article “Look at the Moon” describes the
‘ingredients’ for permanent colonies on our #satellite with a focus on the crucial resource: the #WATER.
WATER is fundamental to support astronauts’ lives, for irrigation of crops and it could be also used, by separating its elements (oxygen and hydrogen), as a source of #energy and as #propellant.
Through the #ISRU Project, funded by #ESA, with the strong support of #ASI and conducted by #OHBItalia as Prime Contractor in cooperation with #PolitecnicodiMilano, the WATER production on the surface of the Moon becomes feasible thanks to a chemical-physical process that allows #oxygen to be extracted from #regolith (lunar sand).
Long-term programme for human #colonisation of the #Moon is becoming a #reality.
