The first FLYEYE prototype, mimicking the complex structure of a fly’s compound eye with innovative optical sensors, has been fully assembled and tested in the #OHBItalia’s factory and it will be shortly transferred to its observation site.
The FLYEYE telescope, developed for #ESA-European Space Agency and funded by #ASI-Agenzia Spaziale Italiana is combining a very wide Field of View ( #FoV), very high astronomical resolution and fast repositioning capabilities.
It is designed for:
– Space Situational Awareness ( #SSA) to implement a #NEO wide survey strategy, observing unknown dangerous #asteroids rushing towards the Earth a week in advance
– Space Surveillance & Tracking ( #SST) to provide #surveyobservations, cataloguing objects with a diameter of about 8 cm in High #LEO orbit.
FLYEYE represents a fundamental #step for #planetarydefence system thanks to the detection of threatening celestial objects dangerous for our #Planet.
